Habitual constipation in children - help and therapy Warsaw
What does habitual constipation therapy consist of?
Therapy for habitual constipation in children primarily involves changing the established pattern of avoidance and tension associated with defecation.
This is not a one-time solution, but a gradual rebuilding of safe, predictable habits.
In our work, we focus on:
- reducing tension around toilet use
- taming situations that the child avoids
- Supporting the child in responding to body signals
We tailor each plan to the child's age, experience and any additional difficulties (e.g. ASD, ADHD).

Who is the therapy for?
Support for habitual constipation is for children who have difficulty with bowel movements, despite the lack of an apparent medical cause. In particular, if:
The child withholds bowel movements or avoids the toilet
bowel movements are infrequent, painful or stressful
Anxiety or tension related to using the toilet appears
The child defecates only into the diaper
underwear soiling happens
difficulty persists despite attempts to change diet or habits

Describe the situation briefly - we will suggest whether therapy will be a good first step.
How does the process work?
What do the meetings look like?
Meetings take the form of a conversation with the parent and, depending on the age and situation, work with the child.
We focus on specific bowel difficulties and what happens in everyday situations.
We work practically - we analyze what works and what exacerbates the problem, and make changes that can be realistically applied at home.
The goal is to reduce tension, stop withholding and gradually return to a natural response to physiological needs.
Depending on your needs, meetings can be a one-time consultation or a short collaboration.

What do we teach?
- respond without holding back or avoiding
- reduce tension associated with defecation
- building a sense of control and security
- Dealing with difficult toilet experiences
- recognizing signals from the body (the need to defecate)
Why should you get a consultation with us?
- focus on a specific problem rather than general recommendations
- analyze what sustains the difficulty in everyday situations
- we propose solutions that can be implemented immediately
- we tailor the approach to the age and profile of the child (e.g. ASD, ADHD)

Do you have doubts whether it's time to get help?
If the child withholds bowel movements, avoids the toilet, or the situation becomes stressful - it is worth reacting early, before the problem becomes entrenched.
Write or call us. We'll briefly discuss the situation and suggest the best next step.
What to do when a child withholds bowel movements?
Withholding bowel movements is one of the most common mechanisms in habitual constipation in children. Although it may look like "stubbornness," it most often results from tension, anxiety or previous difficult experiences.
In such a situation, it is not only what the child does that is important, but also how the adults react.
Helpful:
- A calm approach without pressure or embarrassment
- avoiding being forced to use the toilet
- paying attention to the moments when the child pauses
- making changes gradually, at the child's pace
If the difficulty persists for a longer period of time, it is worth consulting the situation - the right approach makes it possible to break the pattern and prevent its perpetuation.
